Coalition Government looking to tackle cyber-stalking?

23 Nov

The government has launched a public consultation on the existing laws protecting individuals from being harassed by others.   As part of this they are evaluating whether cyber-stalking should become a specific offense.  While the main focus is, correctly, aimed to protecting women, and in particular young women, this law would help anyone that has been a victim of online abuse.

My prayers have been answered – Fast Broadband comes to my neck of the woods

22 Nov

Woohoo!

Assuming this MP puts his money where his mouth is I should be moving up a gear in the information superhighway!

Labour MSP Mark Griffin has vowed to meet with BT in a bid to ensure that Cumbernauld residents with poor broadband connectivity benefit from the telecoms giant’s latest round of infrastructure improvements.

I knew there was I reason I voted for Labour :)

Daily Wail outs suspected Katherine Jenkins online stalker as Geraldine Curtis

22 Nov

It would appear its not just the rich and famous that need fear the UK tabloids.  A week after  Katherine Jenkins publicly attacked,  without naming, her cyberstalker the Daily Wail is claiming to have unmasked the cyberbully KJMezzo.

According to the Mail she is Miss Geraldine Curtis, an accountant, who lives alone in Brixton.  Certainly Curtis has a history of attacking Jenkins, and has recently had her blog and twitter accounts suspended after complaints by the star.

Whether the Daily Mail is correct or not remains to be seen and trial by mob is not the way to get justice.   Jenkins instead has, aside from an outburst caused by anger, chosen the high ground of ignoring her tormentor.  Trusting the official channels to shut down any abuse of mediums such as blogs or twitter.

From the papers account Ms Curtis has a strong dislike of the singer, believing her to be a fraud who milks her own personal tragedy for personal gain.  Curtis does seem to be a strong Opera fan and is pictured with many leading opera stars; which would suggest that her loathing of Jenkins as caused by a misguided belief that she is protecting those star whom she adored.  Katherine Jenkins has certainly been publicly critical of the status quo in world Opera.

Former Doctor Who guest star plagued by online stalker

16 Nov

Singer Katherine Jenkins claims she has been plagued by an online stalker who has harassed her for more than a year.

The Welsh mezzo soprano, 31, spoke out after the person she calls a bully sent a question on Twitter for her during the BBC Two programme Something For The Weekend.

She claims the tweeter had taunted her over the death of her father from lung cancer when she was teenager.

Its sad to see this kind of stuff on the internet. It really brings out the worst in some people. At least twitter holds a log of IP addresses so hopefully they will get this creep.

Seems especially topical as its anti bullying week.  Here is a link to a video that may inspire anyone who is getting bullied.

Greek tax evasion

9 Nov

The recent crisis in Greece seems to be bringing out a lot of very negative attacks on the Greek people.   A lot of commentators point at the high level of tax evasion in Greece, but often ignoring the huge mistakes and corruption the Greek Government is guilty of .  Yes Greece has a major problem here but this isn’t a new thing for Greece.  While the tax revenues would help tackle, but not solve, the debt they were never planned for.  Every country has tax evasion, or its legal but morally dubious equivalent tax avoidance.  If you expect to get X but would rather get Y you plan for X.   The tax evasion is a cultural thing so its nothing new, its not that the country stopped paying taxes, many never paid.  For some perspective the UK has a much higher rate of Tax evasion and avoidance.

Vodaphone tax avoidance

The other thing that has caused the crisis to go from bad to catastrophic has been the very rescue package of austerity measure setup to get Greece out of this mess.  By biting so hard so quickly the measure quickly dealt a death blow to the Greek economy, resulting in the growth required to help pay off the debt failed to materialize.  A death spiral has since taken place, only slowed by ever bigger bail outs from the rest of Europe.

Europe, or rather the Eurozone, can’t afford Greece to exit the euro or leave the zone.  Instead the Greek government bis bribed to stay in; but at the cost of ever harsher austerity measures.  Its no surprise that France and German had a panic when the Greek PM called a referendum.  The Greek people would be far better of taking the hit and leaving the Euro.  It would allow their economy to deflate their debt and eventually they would recover.  Given tourism is a maor part of their economy having a lot of cheap holidays would be a major draw in the current climate, drachma or no drachma.  Even the best case scenario of sticking with the euro promises a decade of pain and stagnation.

Europe, Germany in particular, keeps laying into Greece for its mismanagement and the strict measures are just tough love.  Ironically if Germany repaid the money stolen from Greece during the war then much of the Greek debt would disappear.  Of course they won’t, they can’t set a president.  But the Greek people must be wondering why they, in particular the old and the working classes, must suffer to pay off a debt when German chooses to ignore its own debt to Greece.

Don't mention the war

It was only a matter of time before Godwin was invoked.

As with anything on a large scale its impossible to think about this Greek Tragedy in terms of the ordinary lives its ruining.  People are starving in Greece.  Its not a case of missing out on luxury items, people are going without food.  This is no longer just a political experiment for Europe’s Elite, its becoming a matter of life and death.  The only question left is how far and wide the damage will be and how long Prime Ministers and Chancellors will keep sacrificing people for ideals and their own power.

Let’s Nuke Iran – and other equally stupid Coalition ideas…

3 Nov

Ok, so far they are just talking military action, maybe I am a little early to be shouting about the US or UK nuking anyone.  But today I learned how close the US was to using nukes to help out the French in the battle of Dien Bien Phu  in 1954.   The scarily named Operation Vulture, approved by some guy called Richard Nixon (before he became El Presidente) but thankfully never approved by then president Eisenhower.  Thankfully the madness though up by some backroom boffin never happened or else the world today would be a very different place ( probably a lot more toasted, charred and smoking).

Exploding Earth

Oops, there goes the NCD

But mere minutes later I stumbled across the news that the UK and US are drawing up plans to launch an attack on Iran, to destroy its alleged nuclear weapons program.    I had already heard of the Israelis wanting to do the same but that is a regular occurrence for them.  Surely we’ve learned from Iraq?  I hope before anything happens the proof is better than the heavily discredited dossierthat Blair waved about before invading Iraq.

Despite the public support for the fraud that was the “protection of civilians” during the Libyan action ( you can pretend we were protecting civilians but in reality we were the rebels air force) I don’t think there will be any wide spread support for an attack on Iraq, especially a preemptive one.

But the US is hawkish as the republicans seek to target Obamas perceived lacked of support for Israel.  And Deputy PM Nick Clegg has already been lined up in his normal fall guy position.   Its not a problem if he takes the hit for David Cameron or the Tory party.

Labour, Lib Dem’s and Tory’s, all closet war mongers.  Perhaps the future is green, at least that way we would be to poor and ill equipped to invade or attack anyone.
